Julia Sorrell RI

For  me, art is a visual expression and is fundamentally about feelings and emotions which cannot necessarily be described with words. The basic visual ‘grammar’  is sound drawing and  the skills with the media used which frees one to be able explore and experiment. My own work is an intimate world of colour and shapes which have been closely observed from the natural world. There is a Neo-romantic view in that it is an escape from the harsher reality of the modern world, giving dignity to  natural forms such as plants, shells, rocks or what ever.  These can be taken out of context to create a different world of abstract shapes.

The work of both Julia Sorrell and her husband Ian Sanders is inspired by natural forms. They are particularly influenced by the words of Albrecht Dürer:

“Study nature diligently, be guided by nature and do not depart from it thinking that you can do better yourself. You will be misguided, for truly art is hidden in nature, and he who can draw it out possesses it.”
